Can you name three good reasons for starting your own online business? Many will tell you that wanted to be their own boss, and having a business automatically gave that to them. But, there are probably more people who can't deal with the uncertainty that they think comes from having their own business. They assume, falsely in my opinion, that they are somehow more secure working for someone else. How are you doing on the question that I asked you?
If we ignore the perennial response about being your own boss, what other reasons are there for starting your own online business?
1. The market is growing.
In the online world, the Internet is the market. All of it. And even though there are billions of web pages on it at the moment, there are fewer people who are connected right now than there are those who are online. Isn't that remarkable? Less than half of Asia, which includes China and India, is connected to the Web. But those countries taken together contain about 38% of the world's population. They're also growing faster than anyone else.
And less than 30% of the world's population speaks English; but that language is also the language of business and, as a result, more people are learning to speak it as a second language.
2. It's easier to shop online than ever before.
Pick anything product you like. If you want to know which one is the best available and where to get the cheapest price, the Web will tell you that and more. It's the first choice for many when it comes to sourcing and comparison shopping.
3. Serious businesses are online.
It's been know for years that online businesses that had one person could compete on a level playing field with corporate giants in cyberspace. That's because a well-designed web page looks the same regardless of who owns it.
To look at this another way, recall the disappointment you last felt when you looked for a particular business, manufacturer, or bed and breakfast, only to discover that they had no web site. How did that make you feel about that firm? Did you keep on searching for them, or did you find another source?
These are just three good reasons for starting your own online business. No doubt you can think of others. But, if you know what they are, then what are you planning to do about them?
