The Dangers of Overplanning

Do you know what the dangers of overplanning are? Are you guilty of any of them? Do you prefer planning to doing? If you want to get the best results, then you have to know when to plan, and when to just get on with it. This article will help you to decide when you've planned enough.
There are no end of products, websites, and services that are designed to help you write a business plan. Even questions and answers about them pop up on social networks. Those who are trying to sell the know-how promote them as an indispensable part of starting a business.
But, having written more than a dozen of them, I can tell you that unless you are looking for substantial funding, you probably don't need one. And attempting to write one may cause you to waste a lot of time that could be better spent actually working on your business.
Any sort of business planning, whether it's in the form of a document, or just chewing the fat with a colleague, can last for a long time and accomplish very little. It's up to you to decide how much you need to do, and when to move on.
But, it's my recommendation that you spend less time planning in advance, and more time doing. And that's really the first thing I want to say about how to avoid overplanning.
Few startups spend enough time doing. What do I mean by that? I mean that the spend time envisioning what the business will look like when it's successful. They plan their business model. They create their marketing plan. They create their projected cash flows.
But when it comes time to implement their marketing plans or to get out and sell their products so that their cash flows reflect their expectations, that's when the doubts creep in. And that's when many entrepreneurs go back to the drawing board and do some more planning.
Some entrepreneurs try to understand and plan every step they will take first. I have to tell you that there isn't an entrepreneur on the face of the earth who knows all of that in advance. But that doesn't prevent the least experienced from trying to do it anyway. Plan only as much as is necessary to identify what you need to do next.
And that's the third danger. Many people who would like to start their own businesses get pulled into all sorts of legitimate activities instead of asking themselves what is necessary right now to build their businesses.
